The “Ballad of Ruth” is a one-act opera based on the Biblical story of Ruth and Naomi, with a libretto by Michael Laurence and music by Stephen Richards. Originally conceived in 1959 as a chamber opera for seven singers and six instruments, Richards expanded it and scored it for orchestra in 2006. The noted composer and conductor Michael Isaacson produced the current recording of the work, conducting members of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, along with a distinguished cast of soloists from the United States. Richards and Laurence frame the retelling of this famous tale within the context of a traveling group of balladeers who travel from town to town performing to those who will listen and learn the moral lessons which they have to teach couched in their music and rhymes.
